Gustavo Ortiz is a London based, Argentinian born artist, raised in a small town of a rural area in Argentina called Realico.
Considered as one of "Argentina’s rising stars" by top Aesthetica Magazine, Gustavo has has exhibited extensively in the UK, Argentina and France.
Largely working in collage, Gustavo combines the aesthetic and practices of Argentina's indigenous tribes with surprising surrealist elements, alluding to the influence of European art. The resulting combination—between naivety and knowledge, simplicity and innovation— is gorgeously crafted works, full of colourful juxtapositions.
Rather than labouring under grandiose ideas, Gustavo Ortiz's way of working is tied to a “traditional concept of making something with my hands, and in a way satisfy an impulse of labour.”
His works are a delicate mix of craft and fine art, collages that seem like paintings, beautifully constructed and mounted in a way that makes them seem like they are part of the wood that carries them. The hybrid nature of Ortiz's work epitomizes the South American spirit.
The strong use of color and the patterns of clearly defined shapes afforded by the medium of collage give an air of childlike naivety and understated humor to his paintings which, created in series, offer narratives of the wonder and enchantment of human experience.
